How to Clean Fermentation Weights

Most fermentation crocks come with heavy ceramic weights that are exceptionally good at keeping fermenting foods submerged in their own brine. However, their unglazed nature can make it difficult to keep them clean. There are several easy steps you can take each time you finish a batch to help keep them in tip-top shape, and even some tricks for restoring the dirtiest of weights.

Scrub the weights

Separate & Store

The most important thing you can do to keep your weights clean after scrubbing is to store them with some breathing room. They might seem dry, but theyr’e porous so they’re not. Separate them and store them in an open area, i.e. not inside your fermentation crock!
